James Hayward (1786-1866) was a tutor of mathematics (1820-1826) and College Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy (1826-1827) at Harvard University. After resigning his professorship, Hayward became a civil engineer, and was responsible for surveying the land to be used for the Boston and Providence railroad and the construction of the railway line for the Boston and Maine railroad.
